Indian Coffee overview

Origin Story

India — A Coffee Tradition Unlike Any Other

India is one of the few places on earth where coffee grows entirely in shade. Cultivated under a canopy of native and spice trees across the Western Ghats and beyond, Indian coffee is shaped by a biodiversity-first tradition that directly influences cup character — producing beans of remarkable body, balance, and distinctiveness.

Aveem’s Indian line brings premium-grade Arabica and Robusta into the same trusted trading framework as our Colombian supply: sourced from established estates, processed to Coffee Board of India export standards, and certified by third-party analysis on every shipment. Built for roasters and blenders seeking origin character with export-grade consistency.

Growing Regions

Where Our Indian Coffee Grows

A Karnataka estate under shade canopy

Karnataka

India's most established coffee-producing state, accounting for the majority of the country's production. Its principal growing districts — Chikmagalur, Coorg (Kodagu), and Hassan — sit in the Western Ghats, where high elevations, monsoon rhythms, and dense shade canopies create ideal conditions for both Arabica and Robusta.

Why India

Why Indian Coffee

Indian coffee occupies a unique position in the global market — combining centuries-old growing traditions with one of the world's most rigorous national grading systems.

  1. Shade-Grown by Tradition

Grown under native tree canopies rather than open sun — slower maturation, richer character, and a farming model that supports biodiversity.

  2. Two Species, Two Processes

Arabica at higher elevations, Robusta at lower. Washed (wet processed) and Natural (sun-dried) methods across the portfolio.

  3. Export-Grade Infrastructure

Loading from Nhava Sheva or Mangalore, with direct container routes to the Middle East and beyond — backed by third-party certification in line with Coffee Board of India and ICO standards.

Where AA Sits

Indian green coffee is classified by the Coffee Board of India across four tiers, based on bean size, defect tolerance, and processing method.

TierIncludes
CommercialPB, A, B, C — standard export grades
PremiumAA (Screen 18), PB Bold — tighter sieve and defect standards
SpecialtyMysore Nuggets EB, Robusta Kaapi Royale, Monsooned Malabar
MiscellaneousBulk Liberica and Excelsia

AA is the highest sieve-size classification in India's Premium tier — a minimum of 90% by weight retained on Screen 18 (7.10 mm). It applies to both our washed Arabica (Plantation AA) and our unwashed Robusta (Robusta Cherry AA).
